Peanut Butter and Jelly

All the serious cooks just left the room...

However, they missed something. Everything you need to understand about cooking can be learned from the old classic PB&J.

What every serious professional knows is the importance of contrasting flavor and texture. The ingredients for this classic concoction add up to what I assume is a multi-billion dollar industry (this is not economics so I am guessing). The reason for the sandwich’s popularity has to do with the combination of taste buds that are stimulated when you eat it.

Peanut Butter, by itself, is somewhat salty. Jelly, alone is usually very sweet, sometimes to the point that it is inedible. However, when you put the two together, the flavor explosion that occurs is beyond comparison.

Now, consider using the crunchy brand of PB and a chunkier version of jelly (preserves). The resulting contrast in texture further enhances the mouth's curiosity.

On top of all this when using the simple white bread, which has a mildly bitter taste due to the yeast, you have the recipe that everyone easily remembers.

So, next time you are planning a meal, stop and think about contrast. Your mouth will thank you for it.
